CO-FOUNDERS OF FREE AT LAST
In 1992 PRIYA HAJI, a student at Stanford University, met DAVID LEWIS, a community leader and a member of one of the first men’s recovery groups in East Palo Alto. (Bill Moyers documented their story in “The Circle of Recovery.”) Both David and Priya recognized the need for a long-term community-based solution to the problem of addiction. Inspired by the vision of a recovery center to treat substance addiction in the community, Priya won an Echoing Green Fellowship that provided the seed grant and in January 1993 the Neighborhood Recovery Center opened.
