Community Justice Initiative
The Community Justice Initiative (CJI) was
designed to accomplish the following:
To advocate for alternative sentencing for
community residents charged with non-violent
drug-related offenses. The Free at Last CJI Court
& Custody Advocate

Educates local law enforcement agencies about
treatment and youth intervention programs that
are alternatives to incarceration.

Works with parole/probation officers on
individual cases and encourages a holistic
approach to the client.

Coordinates referral and/or placement into a
treatment program.
To increase the rate of successful post-release
transition for former drug offenders from East
Palo Alto and East Menlo Park, the Court &
Custody Advocate

Visits jails and prisons to talk with inmates
and facilitate pre-release group meetings for
local residents who are scheduled to be paroled
and will return to the community.

Provides pre-release planning and referrals
into treatment programs.

Post-release follow-up support services that
link individuals to drug treatment community
services, employment training and job
opportunities.
